The story begins with young Oliver (Barney Clark) being raised in a cruel workhouse, where the children suffer from hunger and neglect. His infamous plea, "Please, sir, I want some more," results in his immediate removal. Oliver is transferred to an apprenticeship with an undertaker, which is another miserable experience. He runs away to London, where he is quickly recruited by the Artful Dodger and introduced to a gang of young pickpockets led by the grotesque and manipulative older man, Fagin. Fagin, who trains the boys to steal, offers Oliver a false sense of security. During a "lesson," Oliver is mistakenly caught for a theft committed by the Dodger....
